What is the point of delivery charges on food?

Why do some places (usually pizza or other take out food) charge for delivery? Doesn't the delivery person have to pay for their own gas and maintenance? Where does this extra fee go?What is the point of delivery charges on food?
Just like when you buy gasoline with full service instead of self-service, they charge more per gallon because you're paying extra for someone to do you a service. Pizza delivery drivers are paid by the hour, but it's usually minimum wage. They then rely on tips from their customers to make the job worth their while. Some places have a dedicated delivery vehicle, too, that they have to pay for, maintain, buy gas for, etc. And, that costs money.

If many places didn't charge for the delivery, the profit margin would be so low that they wouldn't make any money. Places like Dominoes make pizzas with such cheap ingredients and in an assembly line process that they can afford to offer free delivery and still turn a profit.

By the way, it's extremely bad form to not tip your delivery driver. Just like a waiter or waitress does, they rely on those tips for their income. What is the point of delivery charges on food?
Delivery fees cover a few different costs. With a restaurant or pizza place the drivers are employees of the establishment. This means they must be covered by liability insurance which is extremely expensive. For third party delivery companies the drivers can usually be considered independent contractors and are therefore covered by their own insurance. Third party companies need to cover other costs such as marketing and they usually share a portion of the delivery fee with the driver to help them cover their fuel costs. Tipping for your food delivery should always be common practice as that is how the drivers make money.
delivery drivers usually get paid under $5 so this extra dollar or whatever goes to the driver. I have worked as a deliver for several years while in high school and college. I never worked at a place where the company kept the delivery fee. Also when the fuel prices got to $4 a gallon the company I worked for raised the deliver fee from $1 to $2 to help offset the cost. Keep in mind also that some people do not feel that it is necessary to tip delivery drivers so that helps make up for it a little. What is the point of delivery charges on food?
No, the delivery person does NOT have to pay for their own gas and maintenance. The restaurants wouldn't keep many employees that way. The restaurant generally keeps track of the mileage for the trip and pays the delivery person accordingly. Also, restaurants that do delivery have to have extra insurance because a delivery person who gets into an accident while delivering could otherwise sue.
Wow! You guys need to chill! This argument is NOT so important that we need to have a throwdown over delivery charges!!

Every place is different. I worked at Pizza Hut for 6 years, then they paid the drivers their regular wages plus 50 cents per delivery order that they took. The delivery charge THERE is not for the driver, it is for the store. The store takes the 50 cents out for the driver and that is all. They keep the rest for whatever they want. They charge the extra delivery charge, most likely, because they know that you will either pay them the $2 or $3 or you'll get off your butt and come and get it. Laziness does not come cheap people! What is the point of delivery charges on food?
My guess would be that the company has to cover extra expenses such as insurance for their employees and the gas that they supply them at the beginning of each shift. If an employee gets injured in a car accident while they were delivering then I would think it is the owners responsibility to take care of any work-mans comp issues that would be connected with that. All in all, I don't mind paying a couple extra dollars to have it delivered. If I worked for a company like that I would want to know that they were thinking ahead like that and trying to cover my well-being if the situation arose. Hope this helps!
Well, it's always about profit. The company (May it be pizza or other) is always trying to find ways to squeeze an extra dollar out of you. And also, no the employees don't pay for their gas, the company gives them a limited amount at the start of the work day. I know, I used to work for dominoes.
The extra fee usually go to the gas and maintenance. Most delivery places have a car that a deliverer can use for their work. Also, the extra fee is added to make customers like yourself to not bail out on tips.
Its because the company has to pay the drivers a certain amount of money per delivery for gas, but instead of it coming out of their pockets, it comes out of yours.

Lots of places charge for convenience. This is no different.
Because they can. Because they can leech another couple bucks out of you for the convenience.

Why does the superette on the corner charge $5.00 for a brick of cheddar cheese when the grocery store 5 blocks away charges $1.99?
Gas costs money... and most delivery people do not get paid much by the hour and those take out tins and boxes cost money...
